Despite the ongoing harmattan semester examinations, students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, took time off on Friday to celebrate Valentine’s Day with excitement and merriment.

Our correspondent gathered that students, particularly those in the Awolowo Hall of Residence, marked the day with songs, dances, and various celebratory activities, undeterred by the academic pressure.

Speaking with Osun Defender, Olajobi Akinrinade, a student who resides in Awo Hall, said, “Despite the exams, we just decided to take a break and have some fun. Valentine’s Day is all about love and friendship, and we’re just celebrating that.”

Another student, who preferred to remain anonymous, noted that, “I took a few hours off from studying to enjoy myself and celebrate with my hall mates. It’s not every day we get to mark Valentine’s Day. You know what they say—‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ We deserve some enjoyment, man.”

Similarly, a female student, seen carrying gifts from her boyfriend, expressed her joy, saying, “Celebrating Valentine’s today is no crime. In fact, it’s a joyful day for me. My boyfriend surprised me with lots of gifts, and I feel special. Who says I shouldn’t celebrate Valentine’s just because of exams? I prioritise my happiness abeg!”

While some students basked in the spirit of love, others remained focused on their studies, underscoring the balance between academics and social life at the university.
