Resident Doctors Announce Nationwide Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a total, nationwide, and indefinite strike set to begin at midnight on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The announcement was made on Friday by NARD President, Dr. Muhammad Usman Suleiman, following a meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC).
Dr. Suleiman said the strike became necessary after prolonged deliberations and the federal government’s continued failure to meet the legitimate demands of resident doctors across the country.
“In light of the government’s unresponsiveness, the NEC has resolved that all resident doctors in federal and state tertiary health institutions should withdraw their services completely and indefinitely,” Suleiman said.
“This action will remain in force until both the federal and affected state governments demonstrate genuine commitment to addressing our demands.”
He urged members to ensure total compliance and unity as the association embarks on what he described as a “decisive course.”
Dr. Suleiman stressed that this is the first total strike declared by NARD in three years, noting that the association had exhausted all dialogue avenues with the Bola Tinubu-led government before resorting to industrial action.
“After three years of engagement, we have arrived at this point seeking nothing beyond our agreed salaries, allowances, and entitlements,” he said.
“These are not new demands. The government has refused to pay what is due to those working tirelessly on the frontlines of healthcare while continuing to pay themselves. We appeal to President Tinubu to intervene urgently and avert a collapse of healthcare services across Nigeria.”
