Lagos Lawmakers Appear in Court Over Speakership Dispute
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have arrived at the State High Court in Ikeja for the hearing of a case filed by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his removal from office.
OSUN DEFENDER reported that Obasa was ousted on 13 January 2025 by 36 lawmakers over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The respondents in the suit include the lawmakers and Princess Mojisola Meranda, who was initially elected as his replacement.
Meranda recently stepped down to allow Obasa’s reinstatement, citing respect for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.
During the court session on 20 February, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN) represented Obasa, while Femi Falana (SAN), Muiz Banire (SAN), and a team of other lawyers appeared for 34 lawmakers.
Additionally, Olu Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika (SAN) represented other House members seeking to join the case.
Meranda was represented by Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and other senior lawyers.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro had previously ordered that all House members be joined as parties in the suit and adjourned the hearing to 7 March for pending preliminary objections.
